Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, in the recently concluded presidential and National Assembly elections held on Saturday, February 25, has taken a swipe at President Muhammadu Buhari, saying the President did not do enough to ensure free, fair, and credible polls.
Kwakwanso stated that in civilised countries around the world, the level of alleged vote buying, the use of guns to intimidate the people, and the level of irregularities recorded would have resulted in the elections being cancelled, just as the outcome of the presidential election never reflected the wishes of Nigerians.
He has, however, pleaded with the judiciary to always be the common man’s last hope and to prevent a repetition of number four person becoming number one courtesy of the Supreme Court, expressing fears that it may now be a different ball game.
He spoke on Thursday in Abuja at the party’s National Executive Council’s first post-2023 election meeting (NEC).
The former Kano State Governor and Senator accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of manipulating the outcome of general elections in various states, particularly the presidential election.
He merely stated that the election “is not a reflection of Nigerians’ minds.”
According to him, despite its late entry into the political scene, over a year old, the NNPP is a party for the future, with many Nigerians eager to join the NNPP ahead of 2027, even as he lamented that Nigerians were not allowed to enjoy the “good change” they desired.
As a result, Kwankwaso, who also serves as the party’s National Leader, advised the NNPP leadership to take use of the chance before the next round of election in 2027 to “tighten their belts, return to constituency, and work more effectively.”
“We have four years to reposition the party in order to bring about positive change to Nigerians.”
“Despite the fact that this party is just a year old, I feel we should all be proud of ourselves.”
“We did well, and even more importantly, almost now everyone feels that the NNPP is a party for the future.”
“Immediately following the election, several people came to me and said that we had seen the light and that they will join our party before 2027.”
“The challenge of the time is very critical, because this is the first time in the history of this country where we have a party, especially after the establishment of the two parties across the country, that has achieved this level of popularity in the shortest amount of time based on integrity, hard work, and commitment to this country.”
“I feel it is time to applaud ourselves while simultaneously fastening our seatbelts and returning to our constituencies to work much harder.”
“I also believe that now that we have more years to strategize and push the party forward, more people will be accommodated as members and leadership at various levels of the party at the states, and even in terms of number and quality, so that Nigerians can have an opportunity to have a positive change that our party, the NNPP, stands for in this country.”
