On Monday, a Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) convened in Abuja, issued a directive preventing Multi-Choice Nigeria Limited from implementing its planned tariff and price adjustments set to commence on May 1.
Presided over by Saratu Shafii, the three-member tribunal granted an interim order following a motion presented by Ejiro Awaritoma, legal counsel representing Festus Onifade, the applicant.
In its ruling, the tribunal prohibited Multi-Choice from proceeding with the proposed price increases slated for May 1 until a thorough examination of the motion on notice is conducted.
Shafii stated, “The 1st defendant is hereby restrained from taking any action that might adversely impact the rights of the claimant and other consumers involved in the case, pending the full consideration of the motion on notice.”
All involved parties were instructed to attend a hearing on May 7 at 10 a.m. for further deliberation on the motion on notice.
The lawsuit, marked CCPT/OP/2/2024, was brought against Multi-Choice Nigeria Ltd and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) by Onifade, who filed the suit on April 29. In it, he sought two specific orders:
1. An interim injunction to prevent Multi-Choice from implementing the proposed price increase scheduled for May 1, 2024, until the motion on notice is resolved.
2. An order prohibiting Multi-Choice from taking any actions that may detrimentally affect the rights of the claimant and other consumers involved in the case until the motion on notice is adjudicated.
