Okezie Ikpeazu, Governor of Abia State, has remembered anticipating the “Peter Obi effect” and its implications for his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ahead of the recently concluded general elections.
Remember that Obi moved to the Labour Party just before the PDP presidential primaries, which Atiku Abubakar won.
“I predicted Peter Obi effect and told my party.” “I even suggested that rational politicians not ignore what Peter Obi was doing,” he added.
The governor stated that he never personally campaigned against the former Anambra State governor since all he wanted was a president from the country’s southern region.
“What would happen going forward will be determined by how Peter Obi manages the surge of support that he had acquired,” Ikpeazu said of Peter Obi’s impact following the election. “How is he going to channel this into an agenda that can eventually materialise in his dream?”
The governor of Abia was one of the five PDP governors known as the G5 who failed to support the party’s presidential nominee, Atiku Abubakar. Ikpeazu stated that he had no regrets about being a member of the organization.
“I think (becoming a member of G5) is one of the most brilliant moves I have made as a politician,” Ikpeazu remarked.
The incumbent’s favored candidate, Ahiwe, was defeated in the Abia gubernatorial election, while Ikpeazu himself was defeated in his quest to represent Abia North Senatorial District in the National Assembly by the incumbent Senator, Enyinnaya Abaribe of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
Nonetheless, he stated that if losing those elections is the price for his principled presidential campaign to return to the South, he is okay with it.
