The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced that the names of the top scorers for the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will not be disclosed to the public. Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, the Registrar, revealed this during a press briefing in Bwari on Monday.
Oloyede clarified that the board views the UTME primarily as a ranking examination and aims to prevent a repetition of the ‘Mmesoma saga’ from the 2023 UTME. This refers to the incident where Ejikeme Mmesoma, a 19-year-old student, falsely claimed a score of 362 instead of her actual score of 249 on the JAMB portal.
He noted that 1,989,668 candidates registered for the examinations conducted in 118 towns across 774 computer-based test centres (CBT).
Oloyede emphasized that JAMB has consistently expressed reluctance to publicize the names of top-performing candidates, as the UTME serves as a ranking tool, considering various parameters to determine minimum admissible scores for admission to tertiary institutions. Moreover, due to the diverse criteria used by different institutions, it’s challenging to establish a universal set of parameters for identifying candidates with the highest admissible scores.
He added that while there’s public interest in knowing the highest scorers, it’s essential to verify candidates’ claims to avoid misinformation and to guide institutions or organizations intending to award prizes to high-performing candidates.
