Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has declared an updated minimum wage of N70,000 for civil servants. The governor made this known on Monday, while inaugurating the Labour House.
The implementation of a new minimum wage in Edo will commence on May 1, 2024,” stated the governor.
It’s worth noting that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have been advocating for an updated minimum wage nationwide, spurred by the economic challenges following President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s reforms.
The removal of petrol subsidies and the consolidation of forex markets in 2023 immediately led to food inflation and a surge in the prices of various commodities and services.
Meanwhile, the national minimum wage has remained fixed at N30,000 since April 18, 2019. However, this amount has been criticized as “grossly inadequate” and a “poverty wage” given the prevailing economic difficulties.
