The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stated that it would not endorse any candidate or political party in the 2023 general election since it is solely concerned with the electoral process.
INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu stated this in a presentation to Supervisory Presiding Officers (SPOs) for the 2023 general election in Abuja.
Yakubu implored them to uphold their neutrality and commitment to Nigeria.
He told them to view their work not as a service to INEC, but as a service to the country as a whole, in which they were equal stakeholders.
“INEC is not a political body. INEC is not running a candidate in the election. Our only focus is on the processes. “In Nigeria, the option of who becomes what is left to the Nigerian people,” he stated.
Yakubu emphasized the importance of the SPOs’ role in ensuring the success of the 2023 general election, encouraging them to protect the process’s integrity.
“You are the persons who will supervise those who will operate at the most critical level, the Polling Units (PUs). That is the only place where people may vote.” The results from the voting units are being compiled by collation officers at the polling unit level. When PU collation officers go to the local government level, they are collating PU results.
