Judge Jeffrey Gilbert of the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois has intructed Tinubu’s alma mater to provide all relevant and non-privileged documents to Atiku within two days.
In response to the court order, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has openly mocked the efforts of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to obtain President Bola Tinubu’s academic records from Chicago State University in the United States, calling it a futile endeavor. The ruling party has expressed confidence, stating that the President has consistently asserted that he has nothing to hide.
This development occurred following a court order issued by Judge Jeffrey Gilbert of the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, instructing Tinubu’s alma mater to provide all relevant and non-privileged documents to Atiku within two days. Atiku’s legal team had requested documents such as admission records, attendance dates, degrees, awards, and honors achieved by Tinubu at the university.
Despite the court order, the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Duro Meseko, expressed the party’s lack of concern, emphasizing the President’s transparency. Meseko stated, “The President has always said over and again that he has nothing to hide. His records are there for all to see. Chicago University has also written severally to say that this man is from us. Nothing has changed. There is no cause for alarm. It is an expedition in futility.”
The Presidency also asserted that Tinubu’s academic records would hold no significance for Atiku’s case, pointing out that the evidence presented before the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, which ruled in Tinubu’s favor on September 6, 2023, cannot be supplemented at the Supreme Court.
In response to the court order, Atiku’s legal team declined to comment on its potential impact on their appeal at the Supreme Court, citing that the case is currently sub judice. However, the PDP and Atiku commended the US court for granting the application, believing that it would strengthen their case before the Supreme Court.
The PDP National Youth Leader, Timothy Osadolor, praised the ruling, and Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, emphasized that the decision would uncover alleged secrets about Tinubu and provide clarity to Nigerians regarding his background and academic history.
