The Kano State Government has declared a 24-hour curfew within the state. This declaration comes in response to the ruling of the election petitions tribunal, which removed the state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf from office. The announcement was made through a statement issued by the Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Usaini Gumel.
In the statement, which the commissioner personally endorsed on Wednesday evening, it was stated that a joint team of security forces has been deployed throughout the city to ensure strict enforcement of the curfew.
The statement read, “Henceforth, the residents of Kano State are urged to take note that a combined security presence has been dispatched to all corners of the state, including entry and exit points, to ensure the effective enforcement and absolute compliance with the 24-hour curfew directive as conveyed by the State Government in a letter bearing Reference No: K/SEC/H/435/T.1/153 dated September 20, 2023. This curfew is effective from 6 pm on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, until 6 pm on Thursday, September 21, 2023.”
Recognizing the constitutional responsibilities of the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant internal security and law enforcement agencies in maintaining law and order within the state, the Kano State Police Command has devised strategies to uphold this mandate. The commissioner called upon the citizens of the state to have confidence in and support these efforts.
Furthermore, it was emphasized that individuals who violate the curfew will be arrested and subjected to legal consequences. The commissioner concluded the statement by expressing gratitude to the peace-loving people of the state and urged them to continue adhering to the law, emphasizing that maintaining law and order is in the best interest of everyone.
