After Hugo Lloris resigned from international football, Kylian Mbappe will take on “a great burden” as France’s new captain. That is the opinion of Paris Saint-Germain, PSG, head coach Christophe Galtier, who has refrained from proposing Mbappe for the post or placing any pressure on national coach Didier Deschamps.
Mbappe, 24, has already gained 66 caps for Les Bleus, scoring 36 goals.
He won the FIFA World Cup in 2018 and scored a hat-trick against Argentina in the 2022 final in Qatar, although he ended up on the losing side.
PSG forward Mbappe looks to be the obvious contender, but he may not want the leadership, which Lloris held for ten years.
According to sources in France, Manchester United defender Raphael Varane is another potential contender for the post, having served as vice-captain at the Qatar World Cup.
“I’m not the national team coach,” Galtier stated on Tuesday. I’m not going to get embroiled in the France captain debate.
“Sometimes, the France captain is of a specific age and has a certain amount of caps.
“Kylian Mbappe has a long list of accomplishments and spectacular achievements under his belt. I haven’t spoken with Kylian Mbappe about whether he will be France’s captain or not.
“Of course, that is a great responsibility. It is not up to me to choose the captain. Even without the armband, he is a leader.”
