Alhaji Abubakar Yelwa, the Managing Director of the Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC), has called for a law to make life jackets compulsory for boat users in the country.
Yelwa made the statement on Wednesday in Ilorin in response to what he called the huge number of fatalities in Monday’s boat tragedy in Patigi, Kwara State.
The HYPPADEC boss said during the flag-off of the distribution of HYPPADEC-subsidised fertilisers for 5,795 farmers in Kwara in 2023.
Dr Mahmud Umar, the agency’s Director of Community Services, stated: “The fatality recorded in the unfortunate boat mishap in Patigi on Monday was due to the failure of the boat passengers to use life jackets.”
