The National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in Kano State has sacked Idris Dankawu from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) on the grounds of him falsifying his West African School Certificate (WAEC).
Idris Dankawu had previously emerged as the winner of the Kumbotso Federal House of Representatives Constituency election, which took place on February 25.
However, Munir Babba Danagudi of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who was Dankawu’s opponent in the election, filed a petition. Danagudi alleged that Dankawu had presented a fraudulent secondary school certificate to secure admission into Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic in Kaduna.
In delivering the tribunal’s verdict on the petition, Justice I.P. Chima ruled that “Idris Dankawu of the NNPP has forged his WAEC certificate.” Consequently, the election was declared void.
The tribunal directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to revoke the certificate of return previously granted to Dankawu, and instead, declared Danagudi as the legitimate winner of the election. The judge stated, “Having satisfied the provisions of the law, we hereby declare and return Munir Babba Danagudi as the winner of the Kumbotso Federal House of Representatives election.”
