The Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Barrister Hudu Yunusa, allegedly declared Senator Aisha Dahiru, also known as Binani, the winner of the Adamawa Governorship election. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has challenged this claim.
The collation of the additional election results has also been stopped by INEC.
The electoral body said that the REC’s conduct amounted to a usurpation of the Returning Officer’s authority and insisted that it was thus invalid and without merit.
It stated that prior to the proclamation, the procedure was still ongoing.
Following the Saturday additional election, the commission made this announcement on Sunday via a statement on its verified Twitter account.
The National Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, Barr Festus Okoye, ordered the REC to report to the Commission’s Abuja headquarters with immediate effect in his statement.
“The Commission’s attention has been drawn to a purported declaration of winner in the Adamawa Governorship election by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) even though the process has clearly not been completed,” the statement said.
“The Returning Officer’s authority has been usurped by the REC’s action. It has no bearing and is meaningless.
“As a result, the supplemental election result collation is thus suspended.
“The REC, Returning Officer, and all other parties concerned are thus invited to report promptly to the Commission’s Headquarters in Abuja.
A more thorough statement will coming soon.
