The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has denounced the purported declaration by the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Barrister Hudu Yunusa, of Senator Aisha Dahiru, commonly known as Binani, as the winner of the Adamawa Governorship election.
INEC also suspended the compilation of extra election results.
The REC’s conduct, according to the electoral body, amounts to usurpation of the Returning Officer’s power, and therefore is null and void.
It said that the procedure was not completed prior to the declaration.
Following the Saturday supplemental election, the commission revealed this on Sunday via a message on its verified Twitter profile.
Barr Festus Okoye, the National Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, made an announcement directing the REC to report to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja immediately.
“The Commission’s attention has been drawn to a purported declaration of winner in the Adamawa Governorship election by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) even though the process has clearly not been completed,” the statement said.
“The REC’s action is an infringement on the Returning Officer’s authority.” It is null and void, and has no effect.
“As a result, the collation of supplementary election results is hereby suspended.”
“The Returning Officer, the REC, and all parties involved are hereby summoned to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja immediately.”
A more detailed statement will be issued shortly.”
