Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s Vice Presidential candidate, has assured Nigerians, particularly party supporters, that he and his principal, Mr. Peter Obi, were prepared to seek and retrieve their mandate through the legal system.
He urged Nigerians to continue using their franchise because democracy belongs to those who can exercise it.
“We implore Nigerians to continue to execute their civic duties,” Baba-Ahmed said at a briefing at the LP Presidential Campaign Secretariat yesterday, after the Independent National Election Commission, INEC, declared Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu as president-elect.
Democracy belongs to those with the ability to put it into effect. Nigeria should continue to make efforts to put it into effect. Peace is the only language we understand.
“We won the election in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, they refused to upload the result, they refused to refer to IREV only for them to defeat us.
“It took a serving government illegality and a constitutional breach to defeat Peter Obi and my modest self.
“Nigerians are winners, and Nigerians are looking forward to the day when Peter Obi and I, through the rigors of law and constitutionality, would come to power one day.”
While appealing Nigerians and party supporters to remain calm, he assured them that their efforts to establish a better Nigeria under the rule of law would not be in vain.
Answering to a query as to whether the party intended a legal challenge to the outcome of the elections, he stated, “Irrespective of the low level of faith we have in the system, your obligation is your responsibility.
“Nigerians contested for the 2023 Presidential election through Peter Obi and my humble self, we shall continue to keep the struggle alive, irrespective of the low confidence level we have in the judiciary.
“We had extremely low confidence on the promise of the government concerning the election nevertheless we went on with the election. Hence, regardless of how little confidence we have in the judges, the law remains the law.
“But, we are confidence in ourselves. The confidence we have in ourselves is that the election did not take place since the Election Act of 2007, as amended, provided the direct transmission of results from the polling unit.”
