The West Africa Examination Council has decertified 13 Senior Secondary Schools in Gombe State in four years.
According to our reporter, the institutions were decertified owing to examination misconduct.
They were decertified owing to malpractice-related difficulties, according to Ali Yaya, Director of Examination, Ministry of Education, Gombe State.
The Director made the announcement during a meeting with principals of state secondary schools and ministry management.
He stated that decertification would be disastrous if proper precautions were not taken to avoid the repercussions.
“From 2018 to 2020, seven of our public senior secondary schools were determined to be implicated in Examination Malpractice, resulting in their de-recognition by the WAEC,” Yaya added.
Similarly, in 2022, the Ministry got a new batch of six schools that committed the same offense, and they were similarly de-recognised with a N500,000 fine due to WAEC.”
While lamenting the impact of de-certification on overall student performance in the final results of the 2022 Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations, Yaya stated that examination malpractice is currently the most serious challenge facing senior secondary schools in the state and must be addressed.
“The proportion of 2022 results was 55.6 percent as opposed to 79.5 percent for 2021, and this is due to examination misconduct documented in six of our institutions,” he continued.
He advised all principals around the country to avoid any sort of examination malpractice, saying, “Any principal found deficient again in any form of Exams Malpractice would be severely penalized, and the penalty should be borne by the school.”
When asked how the state government planned to return the hammer by the examination body, Dr. Aishatu Maigari, Commissioner for Education, stated the government would never accept malpractices.
“We have zero tolerance for exam misconduct,” Maigari stated.
