According to local media, the body of former Ghana international Christian Atsu was discovered after a massive earthquake in Turkey, according to his manager.
On February 6, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Turkey and Syria, killing more than 43,000 people in both countries.
He was rescued a day after the earthquake, according to initial reports, but this turned out to be false.
Murat Uzunmehmet, his Turkish manager, told DHA news agency on Saturday that his body had been discovered under rubble in the Turkish southern province of Hatay.
“We’ve arrived at his lifeless body. His belongings are still being taken away. “His phone was also discovered,” Uzunmehmet informed DHA.
Atsu spent four seasons at Chelsea before joining Newcastle on a permanent basis in 2017. Hatayspor of Turkey’s Super Lig signed him in September.
Atsu’s body was discovered by search and rescue workers at Ronesans Residence, a block of high-rise luxury flats that collapsed in Antakya city, Hatay.
According to state news agency Anadolu, Turkish police arrested the building’s contractor at Istanbul airport last week as he appeared to be on his way to Montenegro.
