President Bola Tinubu on Sunday ordered the security agencies to carry out the rescue of the remaining female students from the Federal University Gusau in Zamfara State who had recently been abducted by terrorists.
The incident occurred at approximately 3:00 a.m. on Friday when armed bandits breached several hostels in the university and abducted numerous students, including females. This abduction came only five months after armed individuals had kidnapped at least two female students from the same university. During the same period, more than 80 young people collecting firewood in Wanzamai village in Zamfara were also kidnapped.
Zamfara has experienced a surge in terrorist activities in recent years, with one of the most notable incidents being the abduction of 279 female students, aged between 10 and 17, from the Government Girls Science Secondary School, Jangebe, on February 26, 2021, by armed bandits. These abductions have persisted despite a no-fly zone imposed by former President Muhammadu Buhari over certain volatile areas.
During the recent abduction, the Nigerian army reportedly engaged the terrorists in a shootout and managed to rescue six female students. However, over 20 students remain in the custody of the terrorists.
In an official statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, President Bola Tinubu condemned the heinous crimes against the innocent victims, whose only “offense” was their pursuit of quality education. The statement, titled ‘President Tinubu directs security agencies to rescue remaining female students abducted at Federal University, Gusau,’ expressed condolences to the families directly affected by the tragic incident.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting every Nigerian citizen and assured the families of the abducted students that no effort would be spared in ensuring their safe return. He also pledged that the federal government is determined to safeguard educational institutions, ensuring they remain sanctuaries of knowledge, growth, and opportunity, free from the menacing acts of terrorists.
