The British government has apologized to Mr Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Labour Party, after immigration officers confessed incorrectly issuing him a detention notice.
Officials had seized Obi for supposed financial crimes only to discover that he was being impersonated.
They also claimed the unfavorable treatment he experienced was “completely unacceptable,” and they apologized personally.
“Frankly, the Immigration Official’s action has been appalling – and we are sorry,” said immigration officials.
On April 7, 2023, Obi was wrongfully held and interrogated for hours by immigration agents at Heathrow Airport in London.
Diran Onifade, the Head of Obi-Datti Media Office, said this in a statement published on Wednesday.
According to the Obi-Datti media office, the former Anambra State Governor was wrongfully jailed for crimes allegedly committed by an imposter who is still at large.
According to the statement, the impersonator of Obi may conduct different offences, leading to the arrest of the LP flagbearer in the United Kingdom for duplication Part of the statement reads.
“The Labour Party’s Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, who has just returned from London, where he celebrated Easter, has confirmed that he was harassed by London immigration officials and placed in detention but for the spontaneous reaction of Nigerians at Heathrow Airport.”
