The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, and other senior officials have strongly condemned Monday’s suicide bombing at a mosque in Peshawar, Pakistan, which killed at least 59 people and injured 150 more.
According to media reports, a militant group claimed responsibility for the deadly attack at the crowded mosque.
According to reports, the bombing caused the roof to collapse on top of the worshipers.
“It’s especially heinous that the incident took place in a house of worship,” Guterres said in a statement issued by his Spokesperson, Stephanie Dujarric.
“Freedom of religion or belief includes the ability to worship in peace and security,” he continued.
Guterres also expressed his sympathies to the dead’ families and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
He reaffirmed the UN’s sympathy with the Government and people of Pakistan in their efforts to combat terrorism and violent extremism in their nation.
Miguel Angel Moratinos, the High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilisations (UNAOC), also condemned the deadly attack, saying that all forms of violence and acts of terror against civilians and religious sites based on their belief or religion are intolerable and unjustifiable, and should be unequivocally condemned.
“Houses of worship are sacred places where worshippers should be able to practice and profess their faith freely,” Moratinos added.
