Godswill Obot Akpabio, the Senate President of Nigeria, has stated that the Federal Government will consider increasing workers’ salaries in order to mitigate the impact of fuel subsidy removal.
During a meeting with Ekiti State Governor Abiodun Oyebanji and members of parliament from the state at the National Assembly, Akpabio assured Nigerians that the government is aware of the challenges faced due to the removal of fuel subsidy.
Akpabio emphasized that the removal of fuel subsidy was a measure taken by the current administration to address corruption, as the previous subsidy regime was plagued with corruption.
He stated, “Nigeria as a country would not have survived the next few years if the fuel subsidy had not been removed,” underscoring that the government would have the capability to pay salaries and wages if they were adjusted upward.
In response, Oyebanji praised the Senate President for his accomplishments during his first month in office. He expressed the full support of the people and the government towards the success of Akpabio’s tenure as the President of the 10th Senate and their willingness to collaborate with the legislature in advancing the country.
