The Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), the union representing lecturers in Nigeria’s Colleges of Education, has instructed its members to work only two days per week until the Federal Government meets their demand for a 200% salary increase. The directive was announced in a statement signed by the union’s National President, Dr. Smart Olugbeko, in Abuja on Wednesday.
Dr. Olugbeko stated that the decision was made during an extraordinary meeting held on Tuesday due to the difficulties faced by members in commuting to work as a result of the increase in petrol prices. The removal of fuel subsidy by the government two months ago led to a 250% rise in the price of petrol per liter. This has further contributed to the inflationary rate and the increased costs of transportation, food, and other essential goods, causing hardship for the Nigerian people.
Despite enduring these challenges and hoping for palliative measures from the government, the recent increase in petrol prices to N650 per liter has left COEASU members unable to afford transportation to work. As a result, the union has deemed it necessary for members to work only two days per week.
Dr. Olugbeko mentioned that an emergency meeting of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) will be held to finalize the specific days of the week when members should report to work. He urged the federal government to urgently address the situation, as the union’s action to mitigate the hardship could have detrimental effects on the students.
