The University of Ibadan made a decision to modify the work schedule for its employees, reducing the number of workdays from five to three per week. This change, as stated by the university administration, has been prompted by the significant surge in fuel pump prices.
This announcement was communicated through an official statement dated August 14, 2023, and it was endorsed by G.O. Saliu, who serves as the Registrar and Secretary to the Council of the institution.
According to the statement, “The substantial rise in fuel pump prices resulting from the Federal Government’s removal of subsidies has placed considerable economic hardships on the general populace in Nigeria. Individuals who rely on their salaries and need to commute to work each working day are grappling with worsened conditions due to the accompanying increases in transportation costs and the overall cost of living.
“Following a thorough examination of the circumstances, the University Management suggested a temporary adjustment to the work schedule for staff members, a proposal that was considered and endorsed by the Senate during its meeting on Thursday, August 3, 2023.
“Consequently, staff members are now required to work on-site for three days per week, on a rotational basis. This arrangement takes effect from Monday, August 14, 2073. However, it’s important to note that individuals engaged in essential duties are exempt from this modified schedule.
“Furthermore, the management will reevaluate this arrangement as the situation improves. In the meantime, staff members are urged to uphold their dedication, maintain open lines of communication, and cooperate to ensure a smooth workflow. This includes the possibility of working from home when necessary.
“In light of the aforementioned, the management kindly seeks the cooperation and understanding of all Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments, and Units to facilitate the seamless implementation of this intervention.”
