A Nigerian Army captain leading an emergency response team was tragically killed in Adamawa State on Sunday. The incident occurred in Chibok, Borno State, where the captain, T. Mani, along with his team, responded to a distress call about a staff sergeant named Silas Ninyo, who was reportedly beating civilians.
Upon arriving at the scene, Captain Mani and his team managed to rescue the civilians from Ninyo’s aggression. However, the situation turned fatal when they attempted to disarm the enraged staff sergeant. Ninyo opened fire, killing Captain Mani and subsequently taking his own life.
The incident was reported to the Nigerian Army 28 Brigade Headquarters in Mubi, Adamawa State, and then filed with the 7 Division Headquarters in Maiduguri, Borno State. The remains of the two soldiers were later deposited at the Brigade Medical Centre in Yola.
The Nigerian Army spokesperson, Sani Usman, stated that a Board of Inquiry (BOI) has been established to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting incident. The motives for Ninyo’s attack on civilians and his deadly assault on Captain Mani remain unclear.
Unfortunately, such conflicts among armed service members are not uncommon, though this incident appears to be one of the deadliest episodes of soldier-on-soldier violence among Nigerian troops in recent months.
Adamawa State has experienced renewed Boko Haram attacks in recent weeks, raising concerns about the insurgents’ return to areas previously liberated during the 2014 and 2015 military offensive.
