The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has expressed disapproval of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Owerri zone’s call for the resignation of the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Owerri, Professor Nnenna Oti. ASUU had accused Oti of “corrupt practices and anti-union activities.”
In response to ASUU’s allegations, NANS released a statement signed by the Vice President, Ezenagu Victor, stating that they were appalled by the call for Oti’s resignation based on unverified allegations of corruption. The NANS investigation, which involved interacting with students and staff of the institution, found the claims made by ASUU to be unfounded, malicious, and politically motivated.
According to NANS, the attack on Oti’s character seems to be driven by her gender, her emergence as Vice Chancellor, and her transparency during a national assignment and in the discharge of her duties. NANS believes that individuals who may have lost to her in the contest for the Vice Chancellor position or those who failed to use her for their ulterior motives during the national assignment are using corrupt leaders within ASUU to target her.
The association cautioned that the attempt to destabilize the University through industrial action could have severe consequences for the students, causing disruptions to their education and financial burdens. NANS asserted that ASUU’s national body has not effectively managed its affairs and failed to mend fences with its members at the local branch level in FUTO.
Furthermore, NANS female students at the university are planning a nationwide protest against the alleged intimidation of the Vice Chancellor based on her gender. They argue that no evidence has been provided to support the corruption allegations against her, and she has demonstrated herself to be an incorruptible figure.
Overall, NANS expressed support for Vice Chancellor Oti and condemned the attempts to tarnish her reputation and disrupt the university’s operations.
