Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State and his deputy, Phillip Shaibu, began hostilities on Monday, with the governor apparently shutting him out of his office.
Multiple sources within the government house confirmed that the Deputy Governor, accompanied by his security aides, attempted to gain entry into the Governor’s personal office.
The Deputy Governor arrived at the Office of the Governor on Dennis Osadebey Avenue early Monday, seeking to address an issue with the governor. However, he was informed that the governor was not yet in his office. Despite these explanations, he insisted on accessing the Governor’s personal office.
“Despite repeated requests from security personnel to return and contact the governor for an appointment, he persisted in pushing at the gate, causing a commotion. There is concern that he might resort to physical confrontation,” a source stated.
Another source revealed that both the gate to the Deputy Governor’s office and the main entrance leading to the building were secured with chains and heavy padlocks.
“After waiting for about an hour, Shaibu and his team eventually left. He reportedly made several unsuccessful attempts to reach the Governor through phone calls,” the source added.
It was discovered that Shaibu subsequently discussed the situation with the state Commissioner of Police and the State Director of the Department of State Services (DSS) to apprise them of his predicament.
He also contacted the Government House Camp Commandant, Ibrahim Babatunde, inquiring why he was barred from accessing his office. Babatunde claimed that this directive came from higher authorities and suggested that the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the Government House, Williams Wabba, would be better positioned to provide an explanation.
Despite Shaibu’s attempts to reach out to Wabba, he did not receive a response, and Wabba failed to appear before the deputy governor before he eventually departed.”
