At the time of writing, no less than eight senators have expressed interest in running for Senate President. They are Senators GodsWill Akpabio (Akwa-Ibom North-West), Sani Musa (Niger East), Orji Kalu (Abia North), and Jibrin Barau (Kano Central).
Others include Senators Ahmad Lawan (Yobe North), Abdul’Aziz Yari (Zamfara West), Patrick Ndubueze (Imo North), Osita Izunaso (Imo West), and others.
Aiwaju Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima, the president-elect and vice president-elect, as well as Adamu Abdullahi, the party’s chairman, met with the lawmakers-elect earlier in March and advised them to concentrate on winning gubernatorial elections.

The party also announced that a second gathering will be scheduled following the governor’s race to present the party’s zoning plan to the parliamentarians.
But a month after the gubernatorial vote, the party has yet to make the plan public or schedule another meeting with MPs.
However, this protracted quiet has only served to heighten political polarization since there are disagreements over whether the party will continue to zone the 10th Assembly leadership or not.
Senator Basiru responded to the matter by saying, “I think that our party will finally make a decision on the zoning, probably after Ramadan and definitely before June when the new Assembly will be convoked.
He stated that in addition to tribe and religion, there were other factors that should be taken into account when selecting the National Assembly leadership, including rank, competence, capacity, and the zone’s support to Bola Tinubu’s victory in the presidential election on February 25.
He stated, “Zoning the offices will be in the best interest of our party to narrow the number of contestants because when you have eight contestants from a single political party, it creates a problem for us to have a cohesive force going into the election.”
The National Executive Committee and APC National Working Committee have not yet decided which of the six geographical zones would produce the next Senate President, according to Basiru’s further statement.
I’m not aware that the NWC of our party has taken a stand on the question of zoning and the location of the zoning, the man added.
“I’m not aware that the NEC of our party has taken any decisions, but party leaders will be making a lot of permutations to ensure a seamless relationship between the executive and the legislative arms.”
