The Rivers State Government has taken the step of suspending the operations of Africa Independent Television, (AIT) and Raypower FM in Port Harcourt. As reported on the media organization’s website, this action was carried out by telecommunications engineers hired by the State Government, who were accompanied by armed security personnel.
During a live broadcast on the TV channel, the individuals identified as contractors were observed disconnecting the wave guard from the antenna on the mast, while riggers were seen disassembling the mast. In addition to this, the Rivers State Government also employed bulldozers to demolish the Transmitter Complex at the DAAR Communications PLC Broadcast Centre in Port Harcourt.
A statement released on the matter mentioned that the management of the company was caught off guard by these sudden developments. They had been actively working to resolve issues with the State Government through peaceful means. However, the lack of prior notice regarding these actions has raised significant concerns.
Some officials from the telecommunications contractor indicated that they had received directives from higher authorities to commence the demolition, even amidst heavy rainfall, contrary to a previously suggested later date.
A report was given on the ongoing dispute between the state government and Daar Communications, Plc, regarding the land on which the AIT/RayPower Radio station had constructed its transmission station.
