President Volodymyr Zelensky has sacked Oleksii Reznikov of his duties as the Ukrainian defence minister. The decision comes as the country enters its 19th month of conflict with Russia, and Zelensky cited the need for “new approaches” as the reason for the change.
Zelensky made this announcement on Monday, stating, “I have made the decision to appoint a new defence minister for Ukraine. Oleksii Reznikov has served during more than 550 days of full-scale war.” In Reznikov’s place, the president has selected Rustem Umerov, a former member of Ukraine’s parliament.
Reznikov, the outgoing defence minister, submitted his resignation on Monday.
