Protests erupted overnight in Paris, the French capital, when police shot dead a 17-year-old who failed to stop when traffic officers asked him to.
A video circulating on social media shows a police officer pointing a gun at the driver of a car before firing a bullet and the car then crashed to a stop.
According to the BBC, the teenager, identified as as Nahel, died of a bullet wound in the chest despite the assistance of rescue personnel.
The officer alleged of killing him has been detained on homicide charges, and the incident triggered a series of protests in Nanterre, a suburb just west of Paris, on Tuesday night.
In addition, 31 people have been detained in connection with the violence that followed Nahel’s death.
According to the BBC, Nahel was the second individual murdered in a police shot during a traffic check in France this year. Last year, a record 13 people were killed in this way.
According to French media, authorities first suspected that the teenager intentionally drove his car towards them with the intention of hurting them.
There were additional reports of unrest in Asnières, Colombes, Suresnes, Aubervilliers, Clichy-sous-Bois, and Mantes-la-Jolie.
