Ademola Adeleke, the Governor of Osun State, has advocated for the establishment of a regional task force aimed at detecting and curtailing cross-border criminal activities in the South West and other regions covered by the 2 Division of the Nigerian Army, based in Ibadan.
Adeleke voiced this proposition during a meeting with Major General Valentine Okoro, the General Officer Commanding the 2 Division of the Nigerian Army. The GOC led a team, which included the Commanders of the Engineering Construction Command Ede, on a visit to the governor’s office.
The governor emphasized the importance of fostering a cooperative partnership between his administration and the GOC. He also assured the military team that Osun State would maintain its reputation as a hospitable region free from discrimination.
Adeleke praised Brig. Gen. K F Sulaimon, the commander of the Engineering Construction Regiment stationed at Ede Army Barrack, for the commendable job done in securing the state. He noted that the presence of the military barrack in Ede served as a significant deterrent to criminals contemplating illegal activities.
In a statement from the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke’s remarks included, “This visit is highly significant and presents a great opportunity to strengthen security strategies for maintaining the current peace and stability not only in Osun but also in the wider region. The establishment of a regional task force is imperative to address and suppress cross-border criminal activities in the South West and other areas within your Command.”
Major General Okoro, in his earlier comments, expressed appreciation to the governor for his substantial investments in safeguarding the lives and property of the populace. He noted that the presence of the Engineering Construction Command in Ede was a fortunate circumstance for the state, as it housed an array of Army Engineers, specialists, and combatants who contributed to enhancing the state’s security architecture.
Okoro also extended gratitude to the government and people of Osun for fostering a stable and secure environment. He called for enhanced collaboration between security agencies and the public, aiming not only to ensure security but also to maintain the stable environment and improve upon it by sharing relevant and credible information with the Nigerian Army.
