According to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, corruption is not unique to Nigeria.
The Nigerian leader delivered a speech titled “Values: The Difference Between Success And Failure” at the 100th anniversary of the Baptist Boys High School, BBHS, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Tuesday.
According to him, Nigeria would “collapse entirely” if the country’s leaders do not accept and implement what he calls a “ethical revolution” to bring about the necessary transformation.
Osinbajo emphasized that the government must lead the ethical revolution by promoting ethical behavior and swiftly punishing misbehavior.
While urging Nigerians to reject the notion that corruption is primarily associated with Nigeria, Osinbajo stated that no contemporary culture is devoid of corruption.
“Corruption has plagued every contemporary civilization. Corruption is not exclusive to Nigeria. Many nations, in fact, most countries in the world, have been more corrupt than Nigeria; nonetheless, their leaders sat together and determined they had to deal with it because if they do not deal with it, it will deal with them,” he remarked.
He said that leaders in modern nations deal with corruption by sitting down and agreeing that “we have to agree this is the way forward, we cannot continue to repeat the same thing, we must enthrone a minimum ethical standard to succeed.”
The Professor of Law appealed for elite agreement, urging political, religious, and corporate leaders to concur that the “nation would perish entirely unless we adopt and implement an ethical revolution.”
He urged educational institutions to instill in their pupils the values of honesty, diligence, hard effort, respect, trustworthiness, discipline, and integrity in order to develop young people with sound minds.
Osinbajo, speaking at the 100th anniversary of the BBHS Old Students Association, said the school produced the late Obafemi Awolowo, MKO Abiola, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and Chief Bola Ajibola, all of whom he described as extraordinary people.
