President Mohammadu Buhari has urged African nations to take advantage of intra-African trade in order to reap economic gains and improve productive capacity.
Buhari remarked intra-African traffic in products was $135 billion, or 15% of Africa’s overall commerce, during the opening ceremony of the 9th African Shippers’ Day in Lagos, hosted by the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) in partnership with the Union of African Shippers’ Council (UASC).
Speaking on the topic “African Continental Free Trade Agreement: A Real Platform for African Shippers to Enter Global Trade,” President Buhari, who was represented by Minister of State for Transportation, Prince Ademola Adegoroye, bemoaned the fact that, when compared to other areas, intra-African commerce is as high as 70% inside the European Union and 60% in Asia.
In his welcoming address, NSC Executive Secretary Emmanuel Jime emphasized that there is a need to sensitize various countries in the area to expedite the removal of tariff and non-tariff obstacles to regional trade.
