Comrade Chris Isiguzo, the National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has cautioned against the exploitation of journalists for the purpose of stirring biased sentiments by political figures in the upcoming November gubernatorial election in Kogi State. Isiguzo issued this advisory during the culmination of the 2023 Press Week of the Kogi Council, which took place in Lokoja on Wednesday.
He urged journalists to exercise caution when reporting on such political figures to prevent unnecessary polarization of the political atmosphere. He stressed that astute journalists would be able to distinguish between these particular politicians and authentic ones.
Isiguzo noted that most individuals falling into this category are merely masquerading as contenders rather than genuine candidates in the imminent November 11 governorship election in the state.
Regarding the forthcoming Kogi Governorship Election, Comrade Isiguzo characterized it as an event that would usher in a leader meant to govern the entire state, rather than favoring a specific region. He emphasized that promoting sectional interests would not be beneficial for the state.
Isiguzo appealed to journalists to uphold professionalism and impartiality when covering the Governorship election. He emphasized that the Kogi election revolves around the welfare of the people and is not limited to a particular section.
Commending the unwavering dedication and professionalism within the journalism sector in the State, the NUJ President extended his congratulations to the Kogi State Council for successfully organizing an exceptional Press Week.
Isiguzo praised the Kogi NUJ for its commitment to advancing excellence, nurturing progress, and upholding the utmost standards of journalism. He hailed the launch of the book titled “Media Development in Kogi State, 1999-2023,” as an outstanding literary achievement that chronicles the media’s evolution within the state over a span of 24 years.
The National President regarded the book as a representation of the shift from traditional media platforms to the dynamic and interconnected digital landscape of the state. He viewed it as a compilation of collective wisdom, insights, and experiences from generations of journalists who have tirelessly pursued truth, challenged societal norms, and striven for a more open and responsible society.
Commending the remarkable leadership of Adeiza Momoh Jimoh, the indefatigable chairman of the Kogi State Council, Isiguzo highlighted his exceptional commitment and visionary guidance in revitalizing the council, ushering in a new era of advancement and unity.
The National President called on the media in the state to renew their dedication to the noble tenets of journalism by embracing the spirit of inquiry, the pursuit of truth, and an unwavering quest for transparency and accountability.
