The Labour Party has called upon its supporters nationwide to prepare their homes by stocking essential supplies in anticipation of the impending indefinite strike. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) are considering a nationwide economic shutdown starting on October 3 to advocate for improved working conditions.
In a statement released on Wednesday by the National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the leadership of the Labour Party expressed its full support for the proposed indefinite strike.
The party criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration for what it perceived as a lack of concern regarding the nation’s hardship following the removal of fuel subsidies. The party highlighted the economic challenges faced by the country, which have led to parents withdrawing their children from school due to the inability to pay school fees.
The statement read in part: “The Labour Party firmly endorses the resolution of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to initiate an industrial action scheduled to begin on Tuesday, October 3rd. The Labour Party is surprised that the government claims to have removed subsidies on petroleum products and now generates over a trillion naira monthly, yet struggles to address the demands of the workers.”
“In the current economic climate, where inflation is nearing 30 percent, the exchange rate exceeds N1000 per dollar, and per capita income has declined, many families are being forced to withdraw their children from school due to rising tuition fees. Criminal activities are also on the rise,” the statement continued.
“We believe that Nigerian workers have demonstrated considerable patience and understanding. Through this message, we urge all our members and supporters to stock up on essential supplies for their households in preparation for an extended mass action until victory is achieved. There will be no retreat, and we will not surrender.”
