The Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, in collaboration with the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC), is set to host a world-class film festival scheduled for December in Abuja.
During a meeting with the Minister of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, the CEO of NFC, Chidia Maduekwe, presented a roadmap outlining the plans and objectives to develop Nigeria’s film industry. The NFC had secured a 10-year hosting partnership with the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) in 2021, designating Abuja as the official host city for the Zuma Film Festival.
Maduekwe emphasized that it is essential for Abuja to be recognized as the official host city, aligning with global practices seen in cities like Cannes, Toronto, Durban, and others.
The CEO of NFC also highlighted challenges facing the film industry, such as outdated legislation, including the NFC Act of 1979, which has not seen any amendments in the past 44 years. He urged the minister to revisit key film industry policies to enhance content creation, effective distribution and exhibition, training, capacity building, and the establishment of the National Film Development Fund.
Maduekwe stressed the commitment of NFC, filmmakers, and stakeholders to support the Minister’s 2030 Destination Agenda, which aims to update and strengthen existing legislation, foster collaboration, mentorship, and skill development, and facilitate international collaborations with more co-production agreements.
He also mentioned the National Film Institute’s role in providing training and capacity building for film and television production, including entrepreneurial skills for youth across the country. Additionally, he highlighted the progress at the National Film Video and Sound Archive, which has been designated the national repository for audio-visual heritage.
