Former President, Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians, especially youths, to be patriotic, peaceful, and show true sportsmanship as they exercise their civic right to vote for candidates of their choice on Saturday.
Jonathan stated this in a message to Nigerians posted by his office on Tuesday. He also advised politicians to avoid violence and hatred and to be mindful of their actions as they work to consolidate the country’s democracy.
Jonathan charges the youths, “The future belongs to you; do not allow yourselves to be used as agents of destruction and violence.” Jonathan is the first incumbent president in Nigerian history to admit defeat in an election. Nigeria is yours to build. This election allows you to be key partners in the nation-building process by electing leaders of your choice; leaders you can hold accountable, leaders you can rely on to safeguard your future and ensure our wonderful country’s unity, peace, and prosperity.
“This is a time of truth and courage for all citizens. Democracy has given us control over our fate. It has given us the ability to make the proper decisions, to control our future, and to mold our destiny.
“I urge you all to make your respective choices in the greatest interest of our land. Let us make our decisions in peace while respecting the choices and rights of others.”
Former President Barack Obama, who led the country from 2010 to 2015, stated that the 2023 election was extremely important to all citizens, describing it as a moment of truth and courage.
He said, “Democracy has put our fate in our hands. It has given us power, the power to make the right choices, determine our future, and shape our destiny. I urge you all to make your respective choices in the best interest of our land. Let us make our choices peacefully and respect the choices and rights of others.”
“This is a historic week for our country as citizens of voting age go out this weekend to cast their ballots to pick our next President and federal parliamentarians who will be expected to pass laws for the common welfare of the land,” he stated. In two weeks, the governorship and state Houses of Assembly will go through the same process.
“It is a time that requires us all to practice the highest form of patriotism in our nation-building journey and collective desire for harmony and growth. Let us approach this election with passion, dedication, and selflessness, taking care not to jeopardize our country’s peace and unity while we exercise our right to vote and pursue our political goals and aspirations.”
