Senator Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment, has resigned from the International Labour Organization’s Governing Council after five years on the council.
Though Senator Ngige still has one year to complete his second three-year term, President Muhammadu Buhari’s government is set to end on May 29 this year, when the minister will no longer be a cabinet member.
However, the International Labor Organization (ILO) has praised Nigeria for its unprecedented commitment to tripartism, social dialogue, and decent work.
The ILO Director General, Gilbert Houngbo, made the commendation over the weekend in Geneva, Switzerland, while receiving two instruments from Senator Ngige: the 1975 (143) Convention on Migrant Workers (Supplemental Provisions) Convention and the 1997 (181) Convention on Private Employment Agencies, both of which Nigeria has ratified.
According to Olajide Oshundun, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, the ILO Director-General said, “I have to note especially the renewed passion and commitment which the Nigerian government has given to tripartism, social dialogue, and decent work in the last few years, making it possible to ratify four conventions in a year.”
“I recall that Nigeria’s Minister was here in November 2022 to deposit two ratified instruments-Conventions 2006 C (187) on Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health, and 2019 C (190) on Violence and Harassment, and the nation has ratified and deposited two additional conventions in less than five months.” It is really commendable.”
The Director General, who praised Nigeria’s Minister of Labour for his contributions to the Governing Body and the Congress since 2016, hailed Ngige, who is attending his last Governing Body meeting, as “knowledgeable and industrious.”
“He has been a great voice in the Governing Body, and we will welcome it if he maintains contact with the ILO after his current tenure as Nigeria’s Minister.”
