The Court of Appeal in Owerri, Imo State, sacked Julius Abure, and officially recognised Lamido Apapa as the National Chairman of the Labour Party.
Furthermore, the court instructed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to promptly acknowledge and publish the names of all governorship candidates put forth by the National Working Committee under Lamido Apapa’s leadership in Imo, Bayelsa, and Kogi states.
Additionally, the court invalidated the governorship candidacy of Senator Athan Achonu from Imo State and others affiliated with the faction led by Julius Abure.
Back in April, Lamido Apapa had declared that his suspension from the party was illegitimate, asserting his continued role as the rightful acting chairman.
However, on August 14, The PUNCH newspaper reported that a different Court of Appeal in Benin City, Edo State’s capital, upheld Julius Abure’s position as the National Chairman of the Labour Party. This information was conveyed through a statement released by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh.
Prior to this, on May 26, the State High Court session in Edo where the suspension notice against Julius Abure, issued by certain party members at the ward level, was dismissed. The presiding judge, Justice Emmanuel Aihamoje, rejected the case due to its lack of merit.
