On Friday evening, an aircraft skidded off the runway at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. The aircraft involved in the incident belonged to United Nigerian Airlines, bearing registration number 5NBWY. This occurrence transpired at approximately 6:48 pm during an attempted landing in the midst of heavy rainfall.
According to an anonymous source, the airfield was temporarily closed but was subsequently reopened at 8:10 p.m. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported as all passengers were safely evacuated from the affected aircraft around 8:00 p.m.
The National Emergency Management Agency also confirmed the incident on their X platform (formerly Twitter), indicating that there were 51 passengers and four crew members on board the United Nigerian Airline flight with registration number 5NBWY.
Their post stated: “A United Nigerian Airline, with registration number 5NBWY, skidded off the local runway while trying to land under heavy rainfall at about 18:48 hours. All passengers were evacuated successfully without any casualties, and the airspace has now been reopened for operations.”
