Three Imo House of Assembly members-elect received certificates of return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday.

The certificate presentation followed the April 15 extra votes in three local government areas where elections had previously been ruled inconclusive.

Mr Nkem Otuibe (Ahiazu Mbaise-APC), Chief Vitalis Azodo (Ideato South-Accord), and Mr Modestus Osakwe (Isu-PDP) are the assembly members-elect.

Prof. Sylvia Agu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Imo, congratulated the trio and stated that their win was by the grace of God.

“Today’s event marks the end of a phase in our electoral cycle for us at INEC,” Agu said.

According to her, presenting the certificates to the winners within 14 days is in accordance with Section 72 (1) of the Electoral Act of 2022.

Agu extended the commission’s appreciation to all stakeholders involved in the 2023 general elections for their unwavering support before, during, and after the polls.

Otuibe, speaking on behalf of the elected members, praised the REC for promoting free and fair elections in the state.

“I’d want to thank everyone. It is a happy day for us, and secondly, God understands why He sent you here since you have shown potential and strength.

“You have shown that you do not belong to any party, but to all.”

“Thank you for ensuring that the electorate exercised their rights of choice,” said Otuibe, who was re-elected to a second term.

In an interview, Osakwe, a first-time elected member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), expressed joy with the issuing of certificates.

Osakwe asked INEC to stay independent in future elections to ensure that only qualified candidates were elected.

“Electoral laws are in place to guide you every step of the way.” There won’t be much animosity if everything is done correctly,” he remarked.

Similarly, Azodo of Accord stated, “Let us follow the laws, especially when it comes to uploading results to the IReV portal.”

“This will ensure that only popular candidates are elected,” Azodo, a first-time candidate, said.

He underlined his commitment to providing the people of Ideato South State Constituency with quality, effective, and efficient representation.
