Prof Mahmood Yakub, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), declared open the National Collation Centre on Sunday for the Presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled for Saturday, February 23, 2023.
INEC said the national Adenike Oladiji, the state’s Collation Officer and Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, disclosed this during the official opening of the centre for the final collation of election results in Lagos State at about 12.00 a.m. on Sunday at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Abuja, hours after the election was conducted.
Mr Oladiji, who described the collation as a severe assignment, stated that as of midnight, the center was still awaiting results from all 20 LGAs.
“This is a serious national assignment that has brought us together here,” the professor explained.
“It is also an assignment that is of worldwide importance, and that explains why we have international observers here with us.
“Our task is straightforward. We know it is really straightforward and easy if we follow INEC’s well-defined processes.
“It is a call to duty, it is a national assignment and we trust that we will not fail our country. As we can all see, the results are not yet available.
“In order to avoid just waiting for the findings, we propose that we reconvene tomorrow (Sunday) at 10 a.m.
“We know that some of our results will be here by then, and we’ll be able to process them all in this hall.”
Earlier in his opening remarks, Lagos State Resident Electoral Commissioner Olusegun Agbaje, who congratulated the collation officer, stated that collation was in various stages throughout the state.
Mr Agbaje believes that in the end, Nigerians will be pleased that INEC worked hard to guarantee that people could vote despite a few glitches.
“We want Nigerians to know that their ballots would be counted,” the commissioner stated.
The State Collation Centre for the 2023 Presidential Election in Lagos State is located in the INEC Media Centre, which is also the commission’s state headquarters.
On Saturday, the presidential and NASS elections were held simultaneously in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The results were still being compiled at various levels, with some taking place in registration areas, federal constituency, senatorial district, and local government collation centers.
