The Federal Polytechnic Nekede in Owerri, Imo State, has developed a surveillance drone to combat insecurity on school campus.
The institution’s rector, Michael Arimanwa, told journalists on the occasion of the polytechnic’s fourth anniversary that the surveillance drone was programmed to detect people’s conversations.
In addition, the school developed a 7.5kva fuelless and fumeless generator.
The rector disclosed that the generator is another impact recorded by the institution, with the potential to provide a solution to man’s current problems.
According to Arimanwa, the invention of the drone became significant due to the country’s growing insecurity.
He also stated that the polytechnic had installed Closed Circuit Television cameras in strategic campus locations and on campus and had strengthened the Man O’War and other internal security outfits.
The rector also revealed that the school had partnerships with vigilantes to combat partnerships with vigilantes to combat any infractions in and around the polytechnic’s environment.
He also disclosed that the Tertiary Education Trust Fund had provided N400 million for research over the last four years.
“We invented electric cars, built a gas-fired crucible furnace, invented a rice destoning and coconut dehusking machine, a palm-kernel cracking and separation machine, a palm fruit digesting machine, a cassava grating machine, and developed a surveillance drone in the last four years,” he said.
The rector restated his commitment to ensuring that Ogechi Okoroafor, a graduating polytechnic student who made a viral video on social media saying that she graduated with the assistance of God and her private parts, was not victimized.
“The panel is still sitting,” Arimanwa stated. They are currently conducting investigations. The entire globe will be aware once the report is completed. But, under my supervision, no polytechnic student, including the female, has been victimized. I can guarantee you that the right thing has been done.”
