Nyesom Wike, the newly sworn-in Minister for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), officially assumed his role on Monday and made it clear that his purpose in Abuja is not to fly any party’s flag.

Addressing his first press conference as minister, Wike, a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), responded to inquiries about which party flag he would fly by emphasizing that he is committed to the betterment of the FCT regardless of party affiliation. He stressed that he would prioritize the Nigerian flag while working to restore the FCT to the vision of its founders.

“We will focus on resolving security concerns. The FCT should be a destination for vacations.”

Wike went on to elaborate on his mandate and set forth a comprehensive 10-point agenda. This plan includes focusing on security, maintaining the city’s cleanliness, preserving the Abuja master plan, enhancing infrastructure, reviving green spaces, addressing informal settlements, eliminating revenue leakage, improving ground rent payment processes, and more.

He emphasized the importance of security and pledged to equip security agencies with necessary tools to effectively carry out their duties. He expressed his firm stance against excuses and highlighted security as a critical concern.

Regarding the state of the city, Wike criticized its deterioration and sanitation issues, vowing to address waste disposal problems. He stressed that unauthorized construction on green areas would not be tolerated, and uncompleted buildings serving as criminal hideouts would be reclaimed by the government.

Wike also asserted that his administration would confront issues like land racketeering, unfulfilled land development, and non-payment of ground rent. He pledged to revoke lands from those who do not develop them and redistribute them to individuals willing to undertake development projects. He also emphasized the end of speculative land practices and promised to restore public trust in the government through tangible actions.

In addition, Wike made it clear that his administration would take a strong stance against roadside trading, illegal motor parks, and unauthorized bus stops, as they contribute to security challenges in the FCT.

Through his comprehensive agenda and clear determination, Wike aims to revitalize the FCT and address a range of pressing issues, ranging from security to urban development and public health.
