Aminat Imoitesemeh Yusuf, the exceptional first-class Law graduate of Lagos State University (LASU), has humbly stated that she does not consider herself a genius despite her remarkable academic achievements during her undergraduate years.
During a virtual interactive session at the 2023 edition of the Academic Excellence Initiative (AEI) scholar’s day, Yusuf attributed her success to discipline and focus.
She emerged as the best graduating student of LASU at the 26th convocation of the institution for the 2021/2022 academic set.
Yusuf acknowledged that she faced challenges along her journey to success but highlighted that the company of like-minded individuals helped her overcome them.
In her own words, she stated, “I don’t consider myself a genius. I believe geniuses are people who find studying very easy and quickly grasp whatever they are reading. So, if that’s the case, I really can’t say I’m a genius.”
She expressed gratitude to God for her achievements, emphasizing that it is a testament to the belief that hard work pays off.
“When I was striving for a 5.0 CGPA, most people around me said it was not possible because I was studying Law and my discipline has its own complexities. However, I was self-motivated, and those people started seeing the possibility when I achieved my first 5.0 GPA.”
Yusuf also credited her success to having the right kind of friends. Her study buddies were academically inclined, and they studied together. Their shared mindset and dedication resulted in three out of the four friends achieving first-class degrees, while the fourth person finished with a 4.3 CGPA.
In his keynote address, the Rector of Yaba College of Technology, Dr. Ibraheem Adedotun Abdul, called for increased investment in Nigeria’s education sector. He emphasized that education should be a priority in government funding, and there is a need to improve infrastructure, develop resources, and invest in teacher training.
Engr. Faheed Olajide, the Executive Director of AEI, supported this perspective and advocated for youth empowerment through education. He emphasized that a nation’s greatest investment towards prosperity lies in the education of its youth, stating that a good education is indispensable for a country’s development.
At the event, Odun-Akintayo Feyi of Anchor Springfield Schools was crowned the winner of the 2023 Scholars Day internet-based assessment in English, Civic Education, and Mathematics, achieving a score of 91.67%. Ahmad Abdul-Waheed Agboola of Lagos Impact International College and Yusuf Animashaun of Blazers School secured the second and third positions, scoring 90% and 85% respectively.
