The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has provided information on how polling unit results will be transmitted during Saturday’s gubernatorial elections across the nation.
Festus Okoye, Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, said on Arise TV on Friday that the commission had learnt vital lessons from the February 25 presidential and National Assembly elections.
“As of today, the law prescribes a dual mode of either transmission or transfer of results,” Okoye said.
He said that when the polls closed at the different unit levels, the Presiding Officer who oversaw the polling unit would enter the scores of the various political parties in form EC8A, which is the polling unit level result.
“The PO will sign and stamp that particular result sheet, the PU agent or party agent, if available, will also countersign, and copies will be given to them and the police,” he explained.
“The original result will be digitized and published to our INEC Result Viewing Portal for public viewing,” says the spokesperson. Not only will the accreditation data from that polling unit be uploaded, but the physical result as well as the BVAS itself will be taken to the Registration Area Collation centre.”
According to him, the Collation Officer will have access to the original results and the BVAS, as well as the accreditation data as transmitted and the result sheet as transmitted by the polling unit. It is the dual mode that the law allows for the commission, and that is the mode we will utilize for the purpose of this election.
On real-time IREV delivery on Saturday, Okoye stated that results will be transmitted as soon as polling units closed.
“The commission is aiming to improve on its prior performance. “What we’ve done is to learn valuable lessons from prior elections that we’ve held, and we’re going to put those lessons into our planning purposes and processes, as well as our deployment purposes,” Okoye said.
“As of now, what we have is what we call state assembly and governorship elections,” Okoye said of the commission’s readiness.
“In all the states of the federation, both the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System machines and all the sensitive election materials have left the Central Bank and the different state offices of the federation.
“We want to make sure that all polling units open on time. Second, we made sure that all of the BVAS that will be used for this election are reconfigured in order to ensure that the BVAS operate optimally and that some of the challenges we had in prior elections do not reoccur.”
He also stated that INEC has provided refresher training to all kinds of staff who will be involved in the elections.
