Gyan Asamoah , a Ghanaian football legend, has retired at the age of 37. Gyan, Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals, declared his retirement at a press conference in Accra.
“I want to take this great opportunity, a difficult stage in every footballer’s career, a moment that all footballers do not wish, but when nature dawns, that thin voice will keep echoing into the ears,” Gyan said on Tuesday.
“It is time… That message has been loud and clear in my ears, and I bowed to it; the moment has come.
“It is time for me to hang up the jersey and boots in glory as I officially retire from active football.”
The former Ghana captain featured in the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, as well as seven Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, reaching the final twice.
A key component of Ghana’s World Cup quarter-final squad in 2010, he missed the penalty in the last minute of extra-time against Uruguay after Luis Suarez was sent off for handling a goal-bound shot.
Gyan, ironically, converted his penalty in the shootout, which Ghana won 4-2.
“Baby Jet” played for numerous European clubs, including Sunderland in the Premier League, Udinese in Serie A, and Rennes in Ligue 1.
Gyan is expected to continue working in football as a television analyst, promoter, and ambassador.
