Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has directed Local Government Secretaries, whom he deems politically appointed, to resign from their positions. This directive was issued on Monday during a meeting with Local Government Sole Administrators and their Secretaries from across the state.
Governor Aliyu asserted that, as per current legislation, local government secretaries are now considered political office holders, resolving any ambiguity surrounding their status. He emphasized the importance of adhering to the rule of law, stating, “It is now clear that you are occupying political offices; therefore, if you are a civil servant, make sure you resign. We believe in the rule of law and will not accept any situation where people will flout the law.”
In a statement signed by his spokesperson, Abubakar Bawa, Governor Aliyu also directed the Local Government Sole Administrators to conduct regular security meetings with relevant stakeholders to address issues such as banditry and other crimes in the state. He stressed that community security is a collective responsibility, not solely the duty of the government.
The governor urged the Sole Administrators to foster inclusivity in addressing security matters, ensuring the involvement of all stakeholders for maximum success. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of vigilance and encouraged the reporting of any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities.
Governor Aliyu highlighted the significance of effective surveillance and intelligence gathering in rural areas as a strategy to combat insecurity in the state. He expressed the commitment of his administration to tackle banditry and other criminal activities and expressed gratitude to the people of Sokoto State for their unwavering support.
