Olumide Akpata, the former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has announced his intention to run in the Edo 2024 governorship election. Akpata declared his candidacy as a member of the Labour Party (LP), citing the party’s people-centric approach as his reason for choosing to run with them.
He said that his motivation stems from his genuine concern for the well-being of the people and highlighted his experience and leadership capabilities, emphasizing his ability to lead the people of Edo effectively.
Akpata lamented the current state of politics and governance in Nigeria, where the interests of the people often seem to be disregarded. He believes that the Labour Party is the only political party he has found that genuinely prioritizes the welfare of the people, and that’s why he has chosen to align himself with them.
He stated, “My focus is on the people of Edo State. What I observe in Nigerian politics and governance today is that the concerns of the people have been marginalized. No one seems to genuinely care about the people. Therefore, when I look around, the only political party I see that truly places importance on the welfare of our people is the Labour Party.”
Akpata affirmed his commitment to involving and representing the people in governance if given the opportunity. He pledged to elevate the Labour Party to greater heights if he secures the party’s nomination in the primary election.
Kelly Ogbaloi, the State Chairman of the Labour Party, announced that the party’s Working Committee has endorsed Akpata’s aspiration. He assured all party aspirants of a fair and equitable selection process.
