Manchester United star Paul Scholes believes the team will be unable to upset Arsenal in their critical Premier League match on Sunday, despite the presence of Scott McTominay in midfield.
McTominay was picked to Erik ten Hag’s starting lineup to fill in for Casemiro, who was banned following their 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace in midweek.
The former Real Madrid midfielder has been probably Manchester United’s greatest player this season, helping Ten Hag rise to the Premier League’s Champions League position.
Scholes, who won multiple titles while playing midfield for Manchester United, believes McTominay cannot replace the Brazil international.
“Without Casemiro, it appears that two or three guys are absent today. He brought in McTominay, who hasn’t played much football and whose most recent Premier League start was a loss.
“I’m concerned about our midfield versus Arsenal. Look at McTominay and Eriksen going up against four guys like Xhaka, Partey Odegaard, and Zinchenko.
“I don’t see how this team can stop Arsenal. Casemiro has a lot of experience. A player who excels in his position. He is constantly in the appropriate location and is alert to danger.
“McTominay is an excellent footballer. But, don’t get me wrong, I don’t think he has the same game awareness as Casemiro. Casemiro understands exactly what to do.”
