The Department of State Services (DSS) has announced that they have charged the suspended Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, to court, just six hours after a Federal High Court ordered the DSS to either arraign or release him from their custody. Dr. Peter Afunanya, the spokesperson for the DSS, released a statement on Thursday night confirming the charges against Emefiele. However, specific details about the charges and the court where the case is pending were not provided.
Afunanya stated, “Following an Abuja High Court Order issued on the 13th of July, 2023, the Department of State Services (DSS) confirms that Mr. Godwin Emefiele has been charged in compliance with the Order. In 2022, the Service had sought a Court Order to detain him for a criminal investigation.
Although he obtained a restraining order from an FCT High Court, the Service arrested him in June 2023 based on suspected new criminal infractions/information, one of which is the basis for his current prosecution. The DSS assures the public that this matter will be handled professionally, with justice and fairness, in accordance with the law.”
